Faces of Globus: May 13, 2011 Sending Sustainable Healthcare to Mexico
WHO BENEFITTED FROM THIS COLLABORATION? King’s Kids Orphanage in Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico, which currently houses 16 children in “Family Groups”, provides a nurturing environment for the kids. Expansion plans for the orphanage will enable it to care for twice as many children in the near future. The crew and families at the orphanage also provide help to the nearby village. Casa Hogar Senior Living Center in Empalme, Sonora, Mexico recently opened to house 12 new residents and will expand to be able to accommodate 35 residents. The driving force behind this new facility is the Rotary Club of Empalme. Their efforts, combined with resources from the Rotary Club of Murray and Globus Relief have provided a home where seniors can live with confidence, independence, and supportive dignity. The Emergency Medical Team serves the Empalme area and benefitted from a mobile clinic/ambulance donated through Rotary and other organizations in 2001. This year’s efforts included medical supplies to restock the vehicles. The orphanage, senior center and emergency medical team received a large selection of resources including: assisted living beds and tables, grab bars for shower areas, canes, a transport chair, wound care, stethoscopes, airway management, surgical instruments, back-boards, a portable pulse-oximeter, exam gloves and respiratory treatment kits. Globus Relief is very appreciative of this opportunity to partner with the Rotary Club of Murray in our continuing efforts to improve healthcare around the world.

July, 2009 CHIAPAS, MEXICO
Chiapas, Mexico is an area still recovering from devastating flood damage a few years ago. Dr. Cesar Diaz, along with the Salt Lake Hispano-Latino Rotary Club and Globus Relief to help rebuild. While in Mexico, Dr. Diaz approached the government to accomplish a humanitarian mission. It included equipping 31 health clinics emphasizing on women’s health issues in an area serving nearly 4.3 million people. Focusing on women’s health issues was especially important because Mexico’s National Council of Population reported that Chiapas has the highest maternal death and breast cancer (women age 40-49) rate of any state in Mexico. In 2000, only 44.8 percent of women gave birth with a doctor present. “From the beginning Globus was so willing to make this a reality. Without them, non of this would be possible. They understand how to work with foreign governments” – Dr. Cesar Diaz Globus Relief is providing each of the 31 clinics with portable x-ray machines, IV kits, newborn incubators, ultra sounds and OBGYN delivery tables. Statewide, Globus Relief will provide two ambulances, one MRI, one nuclear gamma camera, one surgical microscope, three mammography units and various women’s health related instruments.
Globus Relief, Dr. Diaz and the Mexican government will continue to provide equipment and supplies to the people of Chiapas as needed. It’s not just about this year, it’s about many years to come. |
