Globus Relief established a partnership with Nepal Cleft & Burn Center in early 2010. Through that partnership, Globus has been building shipments of medical suplies and equipment to help outfit the new hospital being constructed in Kathmandu, Nepal. The hospital will provide much needed surgical care for burn victims and children afflicted with cleft palate. Since November, 2010, we have shipped 2-40 foot containers and continue to collect and build shipments for future dates. We will keep you posted as this project develops.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHT: OPERATION SMILE PHILLIPINES

Studies conducted in the Philippines have shown that 1 infant will be born with an orofacial cleft per 500 live births.  There will be more than 40,000 new cases of infants born with orofacial clefts per year.  It is estimated that less than 900 of these infants receive treatment per year.  Although numerous governmental and non-governmental agencies are addressing this problem, only Operation Smile Philippines provides a holistic treatment that encompasses medical, surgical, dental, and speech therapy during its medical missions.

To offer year round, comprehensive cleft care, the Operation Smile Comprehensive Care Center for Mindanao was established for patients with cleft and other facial deformities in the Mindanao Region.   Most patients are from poorer communities who could not afford the appropriate, focused specialized healthcare due to geographical, economical, and at times political challenges.  Thus, the Operation Smile Comprehensive Care Center for Mindanao became a more sustainable solution.

Globus Relief sent equipment to furnish two operating rooms through our partner organization, Operation Smile Inc.  The equipment was immediately fitted for use in the two new operating rooms.  With the new building and appropriate equipment, the Center aims to treat hundreds of patients to meet the high needs of the region.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHT: Maliheh Free Clinic

Since May 2005, the Maliheh Free Clinic has been providing free medical services for children and adults at or below 150% of the federal poverty guidelines who do not have health insurance.  The clinic serves, on average, 80 paitents a day and is staffed by over 100 volunteer doctors, dentists, nurses, social workers, techs, interpreters, and clerical staff.  The clinic is funded by private donations and obtains many of its medical supplies from Globus Relief.  Jeannie Ashby, Clinical Director at Maliheh, stated that “without that partnership, our supply costs would increase dramatically and make it impossible to provide care to the thousands of patients we see at the Maliheh Free Clinic each year.”

Jasmin and Rick* are two patients who have benefited from the donations sent to Globus Relief from our valued donor partners.  Jasmin was involved in a serious car accident which resulted in her being paralyzed from the waist down.  She did not qualify for Medicaid or Disability, so a friend took her to the Maliheh Free Clinic which serves the uninsured in Salt Lake City.  Jasmin had extensive needs for Durable Medical Equipment such as a mattress to prevent pressure sores, a triangle to attach to the bed to improve movement and repositioning, and a newer wheelchair; these and other needed medical supplies that improve her daily life were met through the generous donations made to Globus Relief.  Ashby continued, “Without this resource, the clinic would never be able to afford to fund these kinds of purchases for our patients.  It just wouldn’t be an option.“

Rick, 50 years old and unemployed for over a year, had an infection in his toe that was not responding to antibiotics.  Because of his diabetes, Rick was at risk to lose his toe and even his foot.  A volunteer Podiatrist asked if there was any way of providing IV antibiotics for Dean through the clinic.  A local healthcare provider installed a PICC line to allow Maliheh Clinic to administer the antibiotics, a nursing agency provided a Home Health Nurse who administered the antibiotics on the weekends while the clinic was closed and taught the patient to self administer the medication, a local pharmacy greatly discounted the cost of the medication, and Globus Relief provided all of the medical supplies necessary to make it all work.   It was exciting to see so many people and organizations unite to help one individual in need.  Rick’s toe is now healed; he is back in school and looking forward to moving forward with improved health.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHT: LIFE IMPROVING SURGERIES IN GUAYAQUIL, ECUADOR

Every year in June for the last 19 years, Project Perfect World sends a medical team to Guayaquil, Ecuador for a 7 day medical/surgical mission trip.  Children whose families cannot afford life improving surgery for congenital defects are treated.  This year, a 42 person team including our Director of Operations, Doug Beck, made the annual trip.  Beck reported there were 18 successful general orthopedic and 6 spinal surgery procedures repairing congenital defects.  Spinal surgery procedures have only been available in the last five years in connection with this project.  The medical team happily noted this year’s trip was “the best year ever” and that even the most difficult surgeries went as smoothly as in United States surgical centers.

WHAT MADE THIS YEAR DIFFERENT

Different from prior years, this year Project Perfect World included a clubfoot training symposium hosted by the highly sought after Ponseti International program.

The project consists of 3 core components:

1. Training of trainers in the Ponseti method of clubfoot care - professionals in Orthopaedic surgery, rehabilitation medicine, orthotic technology and related fields
2. Development of a knowledge and data management support base for sustaining the program.
3. Mobilization and treatment of children with clubfoot deformity.

PPW was also pleased to report the development of an Orthotics/Prosthetics lab at the Roberto Gilbert Elizalde Children’s Hospital. In conjunction with the Junta de Benefincencia de Guayaquil this center will provide orthotics and prosthetics to children throughout the region. Two therapists from Guayaquil have been chosen to receive formal training and certification from a college in the United States next year.

Highland High School, Day of Service

Salt Lake Tribune article

Fox 13 News article

Hundreds of Highland High students spent a day in their last week of school volunteering to help people in need worldwide. The event was coordinated by Laura McDade, Volunteer Coordinator at Globus Relief with the teamwork of the warehouse staff, and Jill VanLeeuwen, Project Coordinator and PTA President for Highland High.

"The scale of this project is the largest I have ever coordinated" said Laura.

"It is incredibly affirming to see our local youth come together do good service for people in need worldwide." Commented Holly Harris, Donor Relations, who came out to photograph the event. "While they may not get to see the end result of their efforts they know what they are doing is important. Their upbeat energy and enthusiam gives me chills. I am honored to witness this"

BIG thank you to Jill VanLeeuwen and the students of Highland High for thier amazing and selfless efforts!

Sending Sustainable Healthcare to Mexico

Left: Casa Hogar senior center: delivering beds, Middle: King's Kids Orphanage: Recipients and bedroom setup, Right:Emergency Medical team and Murray Rotary volunteers

In February of 2011 Globus Relief was introduced to members of the Rotary Club of Murray. Our goal was to combine efforts to provide sustainable healthcare at an orphanage, senior center and emergency medical team in Mexico.  This was the first time Globus Relief and the Rotary Club of Murray had partnered to accomplish their shared humanitarian objectives.

The programs in Mexico were established by Rotary Club and volunteers return on a regular basis to monitor and assess needs.  Globus Relief was able to provide much needed medical resources.  Jim Charmholm, of Rotary Club of Murray, spearheaded the project in March, 2011 and was the primary contact for Christopher Dunn, of Globus Relief, to compile and fulfill thier medical needs.

WHO BENEFITTED FROM THIS COLLABORATION?

King’s Kids Orphanage in Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico, which currently houses 16 children in “Family Groups”, provides a nurturing environment for the kids.  Expansion plans for the orphanage will enable it to care for twice as many children in the near future.  The crew and families at the orphanage also provide help to the nearby village.

Casa Hogar Senior Living Center in Empalme, Sonora, Mexico recently opened to house 12 new residents and will expand to be able to accommodate 35 residents.  The driving force behind this new facility is the Rotary Club of Empalme.  Their efforts, combined with resources from the Rotary Club of Murray and Globus Relief have provided a home where seniors can live with confidence, independence, and supportive dignity.

The Emergency Medical Team serves the Empalme area and benefitted from a mobile clinic/ambulance donated through Rotary and other organizations in 2001.  This year’s efforts included medical supplies to restock the vehicles.

The orphanage, senior center and emergency medical team received a large selection of resources including: assisted living beds and tables, grab bars for shower areas, canes, a transport chair, wound care, stethoscopes, airway management, surgical instruments, back-boards, a portable pulse-oximeter, exam gloves and respiratory treatment kits.

Globus Relief is very appreciative of this opportunity to partner with the Rotary Club of Murray in our continuing efforts to improve healthcare around the world.
